One of the biggest problems I come across with my dogs is dealing with fleas and ticks. They annoy my pups and they annoy me as well. If your dog goes outside a lot or is in the presence of other dogs with fleas and ticks, his chance of becoming infected by the fleas and ticks is even higher than the average indoor dog.

There’s no simple answer to this question. The best flea and tick prevention for dogs would be determined by where you live, the environment that your dog lives in, and more importantly the breed of your dog.

Reviews of the best flea and tick prevention for dogs

In this article, I’ll go over a few of them that I’ve personally used and give you my review and thoughts on it.

Frontline Plus Flea and Tick Control for Dogs

frontline flea and tick prevention review

Each time I talk to other dog owners about flea and tick prevention for dogs, they would recommend this one. This one works for both big dogs and puppies of all ages.

Made with fipronil and (S)-methoprene, it kills adult fleas as well as their eggs and larvae. It also kills adult fleas and one dose protects your dog for up to a month.

Unlike other medications, your dog is able to go outside or take a bath right after using this medication. I would give this product 5 stars.

TropiClean Neem and Citrus Pet Shampoo

I bathe my dogs with this once in a while. TropiClean Opti Neem Flea & Tick Shampoo for Dogs is a popular medicated shampoo safe to use on dogs 12 weeks or older. This formula is 70% organic and its main ingredient for preventing fleas and ticks is neem oil. Neem oil works to actually prevent fleas and ticks from making their home on your dog.

It also smells pretty darn good on my dog afterward. This is my go to shampoo for my dog when it comes to flea and tick prevention. I love the citrus smell on it.

Capstar Flea Tablets for Dogs

Another awesome flea and tick prevention for dogs. Capstar Flea is made up from tablets that you can feed your dog with. This is without a doubt, one of the best oral medication for flea and tick preventions out there.

In about 4 hours after administering the chewable tablet, adult fleas will die off. If re-infestation occurs from hatched eggs or growing larvae, you can administer another tablet once per day until your dog is flea-free. This to me, is considered to be immediate results for my dogs.

Arava Flea and Tick Control Collar for Dogs and Puppies

This is considered to be the best flea and tick prevention collar for dogs and puppies. My dog has been wearing this collar for 3 weeks.

One day we went for a hike in thick, thick woods and the ticks here are terrible right now. I could see the ticks crawling on him but none embedded themselves in the dog. T

hen, about a week later, I took the collar off the dog and forgot to put back on. When he came back from the back yard he immediately had 2 ticks. Got the ticks out, has been wearing the collar for the past week and spending lots of time outside, not a single tick. Also, no fleas and haven’t noticed any mosquitoes bothering him. Good collar! Plus he smells real nice. Will update later to see if collar really works for 5 months.

Advantus Flea Soft Chews

This is the best flea and tick prevention for dogs in a soft chew format in the market. This one is made for bigger dogs though, so it won’t work well with puppies. The hardest thing about these chews is getting my dog to chew it.

This starts killing fleas within 1 hour of your dog taking it. It is flavored, but as I mentioned it was a bit difficult to get my dog to chew it. Maybe it’s because my dog isn’t a fan of these flavors. It’s safe and reliable.
