Are you thinking about taking your dog out for an adventure this upcoming weekend? Packing could be overwhelming. I hate it when I forget things and that’s why I always have a checklist for whenever I travel.
Hiking or camping with your dog can be a lot of fun. I enjoy every single moment of it and it makes me feel as if I always have a companion with me on my adventures. Ready for this ultimate dog hiking gear checklist? Let’s get right into it!
You’re going to be outdoors so we all know how important having proper footwear for your dog is. We know that there are a lot for you to choose from. That’s why we created an article a while back on “The Best Dog Boots To Prevent Scratches”. Have a quick read on that article to choose the best dog boots for your pup. Just make sure you get one! Doesn’t matter which one it is. Extra protection is important.
Just like humans, dogs need to stay hydrated too! This is why you need to carry around a collapsible bowl to ensure that your pup gets the water that it needs. These are collapsible! Meaning that it is very portable and can fit in your backpack.
Make sure to purchase one of these before you head out for your adventures. Also remember to bring water for yourself too! Stay hydrated all day. Consider getting a hydration backpack.
We never want Fido to get hurt, but sometimes this is not preventable. You’re out on an adventure! Even with the best shoes and protection, your dog can still get cut and scratches. This is why we should always carry around a first aid kit incase minor injuries do happen.
When it comes to first aid kits, you don’t need a big one. Just have a small one with the necessary emergency items needed incase something does happen.
In addition to your typical human medical supplies, and add in these for your dog:
- Veterinary contact and dog’s medical history
- Self adhering bandages
- Paw salve
- Dog first aid book
A dog that spends a lot of time on the trail needs a quality harness supply. A good harness tool such as a slip lead can help you take more control of your dog without choking it.
We went over what a slip lead is and the best ones to choose from in the linked article above. Just make sure you buy one that fits your dog.
If you have a larger dog, then having one of those harness vest is the best bet. The one that I recommend is this outdoor harness one.
Every dog owner has their own funny stories of dealing with their pup’s poop. Let’s keep the environment clean and let’s be responsible for our dog’s mess. Have one of these poop bag dispensers with you when you are on an outdoor adventure with your dog.
I hate dealing with fleas and ticks. I wrote an in-depth article on flea and tick prevention a while back. It’s worth a read before you head out for an adventure. Having a good insect and flea repellent will keep those little tweaks from annoying your dog.
The one that I recommend is Natural Pet’s Insect Repellent spray. It’s small and easy to carry around. Spray once and you’ll be good for your entire trip!
It’s summer time, so the weather is probably going to be hot. No freezer pack required: just wet it with cold water, wring it out, and put it on your dog to cool his chest. A simple cooling vest will have your dog feeling great during your hike.
A dog trial pack is basically a dog backpack. A backpack for dogs are designed with the dog’s ultimate comfort in mind, that’s why I recommend that you choose premium canvas material.
Taking this on you two’s travel, you never worry about cumbersome stuff carrying, and your dog will be joyful to have a job to do.
A cool messenger bag on your dog will catch eyes as well 🙂
There you have it folks. The ultimate dog hiking gear checklist. It might seem overwhelming at first glance, but once you bring your dog out for a few adventures, the process becomes a breeze.
In addition to the things that I mentioned above, make sure you bring along extra treats with lots of protein in them to keep your dog’s energy levels up!
